Reading or Collecting?

For my birthday my lovely parents bought me a Kindle. Before the first day was over, thanks to several reasons, I had nine books already loaded on it.

Obviously, those nine books have to be added to the literal thousands I have waiting to be read in paper form.

So, I wondered - for those who have ereaders - are you collecting books on your ereader the same as you collect(ed) books in hard form, or are you reading them one at a time?

How has your ereader changed your purchasing habits?

  1. I buy more books now than I did before I got the Kindle. I think the biggest change to the way I read is that I use the dictionary function all the time, rather than pass by words I don't know.

  2. I also buy more books now. I have about 120 books on my Kindle which I got in October, but I also buy just as many paper books too. My tbr pile including ebooks is now about 300!

It's just too easy yo buy kindle books, especially with Amazons 'one click' system :-/

  3. Because there are so many reasonably priced ebooks out there I'm buying more books than I did before. I'm also buying books by authors I've never previously heard of.

  4. I collect too, I've got books on my ereader I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to read but wanted. Good thing with an ereader is you don't have to worry about storage space ;-)

  5. I've been collecting books on my Kindle like I collect hard copies. There's this website where you can price watch books, which is my downfall. So many amazing books have dropped drastically in price for the day before shooting back up the next, so naturally, I click quickly knowing I won't even read them for a while. Then there's the free ones that change from week to week. Oh and all the delicious classics.

I used to spend an hour or two checking blogs for hard copies of books, to see which ones I wanted to buy and which I could leave for the library visit. Now I spend that time checking Amazon for it's latest sale offerings.

However, I find myself reading books at a quicker pace on the Kindle. I only ever take that with me if I go away for a few days and I read about 2 books a day, even though I'm off seeing places.

  7. I was quite reasonable the first year but I must admit I'm starting to get a TBR "pile" with the Kindle...
What changed is that I can now get short novels and novellas I wouldn't have bought in paper edition. I'm French and the cost for mailing such forms is to high. But now I'm just reading each short stories from Lee & Miller, cool as you please. This is great!

  8. I have a big selection of books waiting to be read on the kindle - netgalley is so easy to download books and there are always new cheap & free books on amazon. Their Spring sale just finished in the UK and I managed to get 8 books for less than £10!! It hasn't stopped me from buying paperbooks as well. It does save me having to carry two books around as well when I think I will finish a book! :-)

  9. I collect books in a way that probably needs professional help. If it's a book that I may enjoy, and it's cheap, I'll buy it. Never mind that it may end up being years before I get to reading it. I seem to be collecting ebooks the same way, though I'm really trying to stop doing that. It's a daunting thought, knowing that I have so many books and not enough time in which to read them, but it's hard to justify selling or deleting them because hey, I may get around to them some day...

  10. I use a reader app on my phone and I mostly tend to just purchase books that I want to read immediately. I do think I buy more because it is so easy and doesn't require a trip to the bookstore.

  11. It's definitely changed the way I buy a little. Because I do have a collecting problem and have way too many books now, I only tend to buy my favorite series HC's in book form now and get everything else on the Kindle.

I've probably bought more books with the Kindle than normal because of the pricing being better usually. I'm also more willing to try out a series with the Kindle now that I don't have to worry about that lone book on my shelf if I didn't like it. I also prefer to get most ARCs that way for the same reason and also because in book form sometimes they are all weird sized and it bugs my shelf OCD.
