If Waterstone's do manage to get back to the smaller bookstore vibe and start buying in lesser-known books rather than all the diabolical celebrity autobiographies, then this can only be a good thing in my eyes. And if, down the road, this leads to publishers taking a chance on first time authors again, it will be tremendous.
So, tentatively, this appears to be good news!
