I've only read Dead Europe (which suffers from some of the same issues), but I've a few friends who have cringed at The Slap for the same issues--the flat characters and the overgeneralised approach to various issues.Stephaniehttp://www.readinasinglesitting.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8463395374040679379.post-27177514153503075842010-08-15T03:32:05.530+01:002010-08-15T03:32:05.530+01:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8463395374040679379.post-17510989735909369702010-08-14T17:25:20.233+01:002010-08-14T17:25:20.233+01:00I came across this review on google because I want...I came across this review on google because I wanted to see if others had the same reaction as me to The Slap. For some reason, newspaper reviewers have been exceptionally kind to this, but a majority of readers (check out Amazon) loathe this. I don't mind that it's done well commercially, but I hate that it's setting some kind of standard in the literary world. For a fantastic, well-written book about Australian contemporary life, set in Melbourne, also told through the points of view of different narrators (and written some six years earlier, I think), check out the New York Times notable book Seven Types of Ambiguity, by Elliot Perlman. Now that should have been long-listed for the Booker!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8463395374040679379.post-37464387218505681482010-08-14T06:15:36.967+01:002010-08-14T06:15:36.967+01:00I've just passees an award on to you! Definitely won't bother now!

I think (though I suspect that I'm a little less put off by swears than you) that I'd agree at gratuitous use of bad language though. Used in the way that you described, it sounds like it's an attempot by the auithor to make himself, rather than his characters, sound edgy.

Cheers,

RichardAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8463395374040679379.post-89206699612060573602010-08-11T02:50:34.375+01:002010-08-11T02:50:34.375+01:00I couldn't believe when I read that this book ...I couldn't believe when I read that this book had been long listed. I found it so tedious, dated and the actually writing style mediocre. Trashy ang gratuitous? You bet ya. A number of my friends came to the same conclusion before we had even compared notes and didn't finish the book. Unfortuately I perservered.
